Windows warning
Just received a call from a Asian man claiming to work for Windows saying my pc is downloading junk files. It's hardly used! He wanted me to turn on my pc. I told him no I don't know who he is and don't trust him. He then told me to F**k off. Do not give this guy any information regarding your IP Address or email. If this is genuine then Windows or Microsoft should contact you.

Thank you for the warning. I came home to find a missed call from that number at 1.55pm. That's after several calls from an unavailable number yesterday and the day before which I didn't answer. It seems to me that if you do not answer when a number is unavailable or international they then use a number you can see in the hope you then answer. I have been caught out like this before and am fed up of it. It's harassment.

Just had a call from this number, which did show up when checking with 1471. Just silence on the other end. Time for BT to serious about these nuisance calls - we have sometimes 5 per day - despite being registered with TPS (which I believe is voluntary for companies anyway!).

I just had a call from this number - asked to speak to Mr and my husband's first name! They said my computer was infected and they wanted me to type all sorts of things into the Windows search box! Told him all he wanted to do was gain remote access to my PC and then he would infect it and charge me for getting rid of it - thus gaining my bank card details. He then decided he was up against someone in the 'know' and told me to have a nice day and rang off.

I have about 5 calls a day from this company, sometimes they are silent calls sometimes someone with a heavy Indian accent is asking me to turn on my computer. As they did not get the message the first and were quite rude and aggressive. I have had resorted to, answering the call and leaving the phone by the tv and letting them listen to the TV and playing them at there own game. One call I told them I had a power cut to which the man did not know what a power cut was, second I got my 4 year old son to tell them about Numtums. Unfortunately these people are persistent and they will just keep on calling. They have also withheld the number on some occasions.

I got calls from this same number today the foreign man asked for me by name. I got so fed up I told the guy to p*** off in the end (probably the wrong thing to do) and put the phone down. We have to answer the phone as we have two parents both in their nineties. After I put the phone down it rang again immediately and I was greeted with the words You F*****g B*****d yes it's me you ****repeated words. I just put the phone down. We are registered with the TPS but it doesn't seem to work. If I dial 1471 I don't usually get the number so was very surprised a number had been left, I tried to redial but you can't get connected to this number. How do we stop these calls? we have no debts no mortgage no credit cards we're both retired and we pay cash for everything except utilities. How do these people keep getting names and numbers?.

Keep them talking....
When I get these calls I try and keep them talking as long as I can. Anything to waste their time! Tell them you computer is booting up, tell them you need to close some programs, ask them what the weather is like, ask them if they needed a degree to get such a responsible job, thank them profusely for their concern for your pcs health, ANYTHING to waste their tome! Of course, don't switch your pc on, don't follow their silly instructions, just see how far you can wind them up! If they twig, tell them you needed to keep them talking so the drone you are operating was able to get a lock on their office. They ring off pretty quick then.....

People who make these calls are not only - sad - they are Parasites in society. They must think we do not have any intelligence! Preference Services only work to a point. Spoke to BT about six months ago on the subject. The assistant claimed that they were "working on the problem". Was also told "not to answer the call". The answer is that BT needs to pull out all the stops! But...with the best will and intention, these parasites are also very cunning in their sad, little, lives.

Once or twice previously (I get many of these calls weekly) I have picked up before the switch to vmail to find silence, then a hangup. I and my colleagues are being harassed. So odd is if that BT does nothing to stop these crooks that I wonder whether there is a kickback, as there is with having to pay to receive calls on a mobile overseas. Yes, I suspect a contra-deal, possibly legal in era of dubious legality (cf, above) but nevertheless annoying and time-wasting.

No, not from this number, they rang to say they had been trying to contact me for several days and that as I hadn't taken their calls I was a "cold stone hearted b#tch"! and yes, these were his actual words! I was so cross I have now bought the bt phones where you can block numbers and the first one I blocked was this number. He didn't like my answerphone message
We have caller display and I've recorded a very 'direct' answerphone message for callers which begins 'If you're squatting on your haunches in a call centre of boiler-room about to start reading your script....'. Usually the callers ring off, including this one, but once he listened to it all and then recorded his personal message for me which involved the F word, the C word and just about every other swear word you can think of. A true example of a scum scammer.

Another call from supposed "Choice UK"
Guy said he wanted to conduct a survey and quoted what he thought was my post code and name. I asked to remove my number from their records and he plain hung up. Disgraceful. If they phone again I will tell them where to go.

Received a call on my home phone but didn't get to it in time - luckily! 1471 revealed this number, which I then checked on Google - bingo! Saved a lot of hassle by the sounds of things - thanks one and all

This number is a persistent pest. If you do pick the phone up, do yourselves a favour and do not enter into conversation with whomever is calling from this number. Set your phone to go to answerphone after 3 rings using a generic answer message. It must drive them insane. Any genuine caller will leave a message. If this number is calling your home on a continual basis, report it via the Information Commissioner's Office website. BT, Virgin and the like will not or are unable to stop these calls and neither can the TPS. Write to your MP and make your voice count!! The more people complain, the sooner this nuisance can be stamped out.

I've also had this number a few times, and truly sick of getting these calls. Looks like it's time to invest in a CRP call blocker.

Thank goodness for this website! Didn't get to phone in time and it went to my answerphone,.... no message. Did a 1471 and checked the number on here which saved me trying to ring back! Hopefully they won't try again........ Shame the providers can't do something about it!

Indian Scammers
This number has called me about PPI refunds and as Microsoft, Clearly an Indian call centre running a variety of scams. PPI, to get your bank and credit card details. Microsoft, to access your computer, or charge your credit card for emptying the error file on your computer, which you can do yourself for free and doesn't represent any problem.

Silence is Golden
Just received a silence call from this number I thought I would check it out and ended up here. During the day when I am not expecting any calls I answer the phone with a 'Hello' and wait for the caller's response. I am now either the decorator, the plumber or the electrician or I might be a French Speaking person. They soon go away.

Very strong Indian Accent
Have just received a call from a woman claiming to work for Windows and "regarding my PC". She had a very strong Indian accent. When I asked where she got my number from (I am ex directory and registered with TPS) she immediately hung up. Not the first time we have had this kind of call. If you get a call from this number do not turn on your pc!

Windows problem
I've had another call...decided to ring my local police station who gave me a number for Action Fraud. They have been set up by the National Fraud Department to record these such calls. Everyone needs to report these companies and then the National Fraud department can prosecute. Their telephone number is 0300 123 2040

Windows Error
Quite a plausible call at first and I can quite see how people get dragged into providing their details. I let it go on a while before admitting I was a software developer, for which I got a string of obscene abuse. Frankly an upsetting experience all round. I filled in the online form for Action Fraud above as it was out of hours. Hopefully the weight of complaint on this forum will help to close it down.

Supposedly got my number from the IRS!!!!
They claim to have got my number from the "International Revenue Service" which is the American governments tax department lol I've never left the UK so have never paid tax in the USA pmsl. I was fully aware of this being a scam the moment a man stated he was "David Watson from windows technical department" - He had a thick indian voice & the most English name I can think of lol. He tried to prove who he was by giving me my SNID number claiming it was 32 characters long made from numbers & letters.... What an idiot! The same voice keeps calling me & I have recorded every call, yesterday I got 9 calls from the same guy who was using a different name each time. The names so far that I can remember off the top of my head have been: Kevin Sam David Watson Paul Luke Watson

I have informed the police. They have also used another number....16264459134.... yes that is correct.... there is no "0" at the beginning! I am with Sky & they have stated that if you inform them of each number used whether you get a number or witheld, inform them everytime or at the end of the day as to how many calls you have had, they can log the complaints on my account & build up a report which they can then take to the courts along with all other reports from customers, change my number after a certain amount of complaints, but due to the cost of changing a number that they will have to pay they need to log enough calls first to be able to go to the court to get the court to allow them to change their customers numbers without them or the customer having to pay out to get the new number in the first place. I spoke with a lovely (I think he was irish) guy called Trevor at sky who has informed me of this. So please guys keep reporting this to your providers!

REALLY FED UP
Have received eight calls from this number, some of them I have answered- silence only. If this is from the so called 'windows' support, we have had nuisance calls from them for the last two years. It is not always the same number which contacts us, although it is the same company. The caller is always an Asian sounding person ( we have had male and female) they inform us our computer has been hacked or some other such rubbish or they are trying to refund you some money. Again WHEN IS SOMEONE GOING TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT THESE FRAUDSTERS?

3 more calls today
I posted on April 24th and have had at least 3 calls every day since then! Male and female, this morning it was "we are conducting a lifestyle survey". This afternoon it was (yet again) a problem with my computer - decided to string them along but when we got to the question"what can you see on your computer screen" I said it was just a black screen. The Indian man on the phone then told me I had a serious problem and I should get my computer fixed - i told him I wasn't aware it was a problem as I don't use my computer! He realised I was on to him, told me to "go to hell b***h" and hung up. A very unpleasant call - I really don't know how to stop them. Checked with BT and it will cost me approx £4 a month to block the number! Any other suggestions anyone?

"Checked with BT and it will cost me approx £4 a month to block the number! Any other suggestions anyone?" If it's a specific number, some phones allow you to block numbers (mine is a ~3yr-old Panasonic KX-TG8521EB, but there are plenty more. Next phone you buy, check for this feature. You can also use free BT "Privacy at home" service (I think, check details) and block all calls that don't display numbers however this'll block your doctor, overseas calls, etc.

I love "free computer support" calls
Just had a call from this number, but they hung up. Shame, I enjoy these "your computer is infected" calls. I have the computer expertise to set up a "virtual machine" in a bewildering way, and let them connect to it and do whatever they want it is totally immune from any harm (I just delete it when finished). It doesn't have things expected like "Run" box, Internet Explorer, Event Viewer (list of what look like errors), standard temporary directory (full of files with odd names that they claim are infections), etc. I had one "support" team (voice on phone, technician connected to my "computer") fully occupied for 57 minutes! I don't mind the time, if I am not busy with important stuff: much more fun than a crossword or anything on TV. If anyone wants to emulate (expertise needed): download free VMware Player, set up, say Windows XP (or 7 or anything), configure in very restricted way.

BT are rubbish
BT want me to buy a new BT Phone
BT apparently can't help as 0203 1291891 is not a real number and they can't trace where the call came from. They did use my call as an opportunity to try to sell me a new telephone though!

I don't need new windows.
I get so fed up with these calls. One morning I thought I would entertain myself by telling them I didn't need new windows, the caller tried to explain he was from windows tech department I told him that I was happy with the windows and had no problem with them. Then he said there was virus that needed to be cleaned, I told him that I had just cleaned them. He tried to explain that it was on my computer, I thanked him for giving me a computer as I didn't have one. I wonder why he put the phone down?

accident scam this time, report to ICO
"Caller had a very strong Indian/Asian accent and told me that that an accident claim had been registered from this number. When I said it hadn't he then pushed to claim it was my spouse or other member of my household (unlikely as business number). He still wouldn't take no, so I said "ah yes", I then proceeded to tell him that the accident was in collision with a hippopotamus, I repeated this three times and then he tried to phish for further personal details. He dodged the question to give business contact address. I was hungry and it was nearing lunch-time, so I stopped playing with him, explained it was a criminal offence to pester, the number was registered with the TPS and a report would be filed." Please file your own reports with the ICO, they need quite a large "tipping point" of complaints, they do hand out considerable fines, but such action can only be initiated after lots of complaints. ico org uk for_the_public topic_specific_guides marketing
