Mysterious message from BT 0800500288
I have just spoken to BT about a text message from the above number stating that "another provider would like to take over our phone line" . Apparently this is true, so BT are now investigating what is happening and I have confirmed with them that I have not instructed anyone else to take over our phone line. Now awaiting a full response from BT. 10th December 2014.

Nice try, but this is clearly a scam and the scammers are trying to give it a veneer of plausibility by coming on here pretending that the messages are genuine. I checked with BT This evening and they confirmed that these messages are nothing to do with them.

This is not a Scam and needs Action
Had the same message Phoned BT on the general switchboard number 0800800150. Finally talking to a BT Supervisor, BT confirmed that the message was from them and it is a legal requirement when another network provider places an order to take over the line number. If you have not requested to change supplier or move then it is necessary that the customer confirms, by the date indicated, that the phone number/line must not be moved. Failing to do so will result in loosing the phone number and there is nothing that can be done to reverse the situation.

Just been thro the same experience. Email received yesterday saying someone wanted to take over the line. I forwarded to BT's Phishing address and got standard auto-ack. Then checked on here last night and realised it probably wasn't a scam so called BT this morning. They confirmed that someone had indeed applied to have my line changed, so I got the order cancelled. No idea who the person is. Strange.

Got same text message
After looking at all the comments above please forgive me for being completely confused. On balance I am inclined to believe that it must be a scam because I simply cannot believe that BT would just give my contracted phone number away without written authority from me or unless I myself had defaulted badly under the terms of my contract with them which allows them to take payment monthly by direct debit. They quite simply have me where they want me and would not wish to lose me. They also would risk an expensive court case if they were in default of contract with me.

It really is true. I received the same message. I went through a 'chat' via my email account and the gentleman put me through to the BT Options team who said there had been a request for my line. I said I wasn't moving and had not spoken to another provider so he sorted it for me. I couldn't believe it was cosher but it is.

We received the same message because we are moving our BT broadband to EE. That's what triggered the call. It's not a scam.

It's not a scam. It is BT. Apparently they have received notification that another service provider wishes to take over the services within your home (whatever you might have). I received the call today, rang BT and they were able to tell me it was in fact SKY wishing to take over my services. I immediately got them to put a block on the request as I had not spoken to anyone from SKY. Interestingly, if I had ignored the SMS message and not rang BT, come the date in the message BT would've cut me off (landline & Broadband) and I would've been left with nothing!! Don't ignore, ring BT and find out what has happened.

Same message
I had that message today - 13.10.2014. I rang the number, using 141 before dialling, and a woman answered immediately as BT. I explained what had happened and she said she didn't know what I was talking about and that the number it was supposed to have come from - 64364 - was not a BT number. She was not helpful - you'd think she'd have wanted to take some details so that BT could put a message on their site to warn/advise people about it.

Just had the above text and its from Bt.
Having received the above text from 64 364 I got in touch with Bt (using a different number not in the text) and they confirmed my phone line was in the process of being given to another customer. I had to persuade the initial person I spoke to look into the matter, as they just presumed it was a spam text. It isn't. 64364 is where all my Bt related text messages come from. If you get this message don't ignore it. Call Bt using there normal helpline number to be safe and get the transfer of your number stopped.

Third letter from BT in a month!!!
Each time I have called BT to say I am not moving. After the second letter they put a note in my account that I am not moving. This was on Dec 6th. Today I got another letter stating that someone was taking over my line!! This is very exasperating!!!

Not a scam, it appears
I called BT on their main enquiries number very helpful, it appeared that a non-BT company had requested to take over my line. BT send this text as a check as mistakes can arise from errors in address details etc.

This is not a scam, it needs action.
As others have said, this is not a scam, if you receive this message from 64364 ring BT as quickly as possible to get it cancelled. I have had it for the second time this month and it's getting rather annoying, had to ring BT again to cancel it. When I first received the message I was initially suspicious thinking it was a scam but after searching online I found other people who had the same problem who had to ring BT because of cock ups by SKY with the address.

same as above got a letter and rang BT it was in fact true and they cancelled it for me. They could not trace who had made the application looks as if its the start of an elaborate phishing exercise to take over peoples account and payment details. I have changed my passwords etc since!

Not a scam
I responded to the letter I received, confirmed I was not moving etc. Gave me a reference number and assured me everything would be OK but, guess what, they went ahead and gave my number to someone else. Lost phone and broadband. Now waiting for a "Specialist Team" to contact me to day......absolutely disgusted with BT and will be seeking compensation.

Hello, BT here. Another customer wants to take ove
I am going to report this to Action Fraud tomorrow - it seems possible that the request to BT to take over the line is only the first stage of a scam and BT are just falling into the trap of complying. Lots of occurrences on who's number is this web site - its too much a coincidence that BT wont say who requested the line take over.

This site is just the tip of the iceberg
IF this is just the people who are aware of this site then nationally this problem is huge and is therefore a serious problem within BT procedures or a monumental scam! Its about time BT were told to get their house in order!

SCAM!! Please ignore and don't provide any details
I received a text claiming to be from BT saying that a customer wants to take over the phone line at my address and if that is wrong, to call them on this 0800 number. I called the official BT helpline, they confirmed it was not from them and this is a scam. Be aware - reviews above attesting to the authenticity of the phone number are fake as well! Most likely written by the same scammers behind the text phishing.

got a letter saying line being taken over and
to call 0800 500288 Wasnt sure if this was a scam or not. Called an official BT number who confirmed the letter was genuine. The guy thought the other party ( who he refused to name citing Data protection) had just made a mistake. I dont see how this is BTs fault but a bit concerning that if I had not seen the letter I would have lost my line..

got an email saying my line being taken over and
to call 0800 500288. I called BT on 0800 800 150 and advised the voice response service that I was moving house which I was not. I was connected to the department that handles line transfers and passed their security questions and confirmed that I was the account holder for the line in question. He confirmed that there was an order in place which would have been actioned by mid November had I not contacted them. He adivsed that any alternative supplier could place such an order on them as that was the way the system worked. He was unable to give me the name of the person or company taking it over. He felt I may have had a conversation with an alternative supplier who could have misconstrued the outcome which I had not. My experience shows you must call BT if you receive such a communication. the 0800 800 150 number Eriworked for me as i was reluctant to call the 0800 500 288 if it was a scam

Great Service from BT
I got a call at 9.45 in the evening from 0845 602 1111 to say my line was being taken over and to call 0800 500 288. Next day I called BT on 0800 800 150 and spoke to Chloe, a customer advisor who was extremely helpful. She found out that the company trying to take over my landline number was SKY. I have never had anything to do with Sky - no TV, no phone, nothing, in fact I have never had any contact with Sky. Anyway, BT cancelled the switch, and were very polite and efficient. In fact my call to BT lasted only 19 minutes. Great service, and peace of mind restored. However, it is very worrying that somebody, somewhere is able to commit this scam, for scam it must be. There is obviously a loophole in the system somewhere that allows the scammers to profit from doing this because they certainly won't be doing it without making money from it.

Me too, from ee
I had the same experience, text-to-voice message saying my BT phone line was being taken over, 15 Aug 17. I have not talked recently to any phone company, no possible misunderstanding. I phoned BT, it was indeed being transferred, I cancelled. I asked if it was Sky, and found that it was ee.

BT letter this morning.
I'm on EE and have already told them not to switch over, then had a letter today from BT about it, called and they stopped it, but also asked who my current provider was, which I thought was weird. I will call both again in a couple of days to confirm it's been cancelled. Also had a SIM come through for BT and had the name MR JONNY HOTCHKISS on it. I have reported all info to OFCOM.

BT LETTER
Received a letter yesterday stating that my number was to be issued to someone else if I did not respond by the deadline date. Strangely enough though the name on the letter is not mine, although it is my address. I rang them last night and the man I spoke to immediately started trying to sell me another service? I told him that I did not want to cancel my line and that I wasnt interested in making any changes. He assured me it had been cancelled but when I asked for a ref no as proof he just said it was Luke from Doncaster? Today however a parcel arrived addressed again to someone I dont know at my address which had been left at a neighbours. When I got it home I realised it was not for me and the accompanying letter said Welcome to EETV and Broadband?? I am 84 and have no interest in this at all, so am not sure what to do with this box now. Any ideas anyone?
