Hmmm
Received call purporting to be George from BT who stated their Engineers had detected some faults in our area, Farington, Leyland PR25 3GR. Asked for his number gave us this 0800 679079. Said then how many lines did we have. Come on!!!!! If you were BT you would have known George. Needless to say he put phone down. Shame his actual number didn't come up on phone system as obviously withheld! From Sid Home Safe Collections Ltd Farington.

Another telephone sales company telling lies!
Had a call from 'James' saying he was from BT and they had detected faults on the line in our area (Shrewsbury) and would be doing some work. Asked how many lines we had. I asked him if he was really from BT and he said yes! Asked him for his number so I could cal him back - when I asked for his surname he hung up!

Sales company telling lies!
Had a call from Stacy, BT exchange saying work is going to be done in our area this week and needs to know how many handsets we have. I asked why. So we can get them back up and running if there is a problem. I said, wouldn't it be the number of lines you would need as opposed to the handsets and if you were BT you would already know!

Anonymous call
Caller gave this number - same story as all the above. Working in exchange - didn't know what sort of lines they were working on. Sales scammers, improve your techniques - you're rubbish.

Now it is Kelly!
Girl (Kelly) proporting to be from BT called blabbering on about line faults and wanting to get info from me. I asked for her surname (West) and a contact number (0800 679079) before saying I'd call her back (apparently the number would go straight to her... don't think so!), but I had already smelled a rat. My search led me here. I am suspicious of everyone these days lol!

Stacy again!
Stacy still purporting to be from BT contacted us today and told us there would be disruption in our area tomorrow morning due to engineers working on the exchange. She asked how many handsets we have. I said that I would call her back (as I was suspicious) but said I didn't understand how the amount of handsets we have is relevant to work at exchange level. She still reported this would help them get us back up and running if there was an issue with service. She gave me the phone number 0800 679 079 and also had the surname West! They must all be related :-) Needless to say I didn't call.

Same script, but this is the Wirral area - surely Stacy and Ben and George, who all sound like fairly intelligent people could get far better jobs than this???

Same old, same old....
Just had a girl from "BT Exchange" call me....they're working in my area and asked how many handsets I had "Why do you need to know how many handsets I've got?", incase the lines go down it's so we know how many we have to get up and running. What ??? Not the first time they've called me, but at least they didn't hang up, like the last time ! "Are you ringing from BT?"...."Yes"....so she gave me 0800 679079 as the number to call and get it confirmed.

Seems genuine
We had a call from BT saying they were checking faults on our line and how many would it affect in the office. I rang the number given and got through to BT and chatted about how this was a potential scam. I then panicked and found another number for BT on line and rang that and was reassured I had spoken to BT and set a password for future proofing against diversion requests. Still feel as though I have unwittingly done something wrong...

I had Ben so maybe he's changed from George 0)
Had the call today from Ben saying the engineer was going to be in the area as they had found faults on our line - He asked how many lines we have and whether we were using the same telephone system for the last 3 years.. I asked how that was relevant and he couldn't answer which is why I was suspicious. He then asked for the MD's name and I asked why he needed that - he said to give him a call once they'd found the faults. Did a search on the website and found this !! Scam calls !!!

"Nichola"
I fell for this - same questions (age and # of connections) - small business in Malton, North Yorkshire. I was sceptical but couldn't see what they hoped to gain except to sell phone system upgrades. On reflection, she did ask "your address sounds like a nice quiet location?" (answer=no) which, if not just smalltalk, might indicate something more sinister.

Didn't catch remember female callers name
Just had a call from BT Exchange asked for their number and google brought me here. Exactly the same script as above "how many hand sets". I asked her to tell me my account number or the numbers or and of the lines that we pay for from BT. She was unable to tell me any of this information and got defensive saying she was not party to it. As to the angle of the scam I'm not sure but someone mentioned above that they were asking for a managers name. There are a number of email scams that use social engineering like this to get a name. They then link this to the companies domain name and will send spoof emails pretending to be from senior people, often asking for money to be transferred urgently.

Nicola calling again
Just had a call from "Nicola"... we are from BT Openreach... we have a few minor faults in your area and we need to know how many handsets you have etc. I just blocked her off straight away and said I would ring back, then checked the number. No such number on BT's sites, so this is a scam. Actually this is fraudulent misrepresentation... I'd like to see the Police and OFCOM coming down on these people who are obviously in the UK.

Called today. Said they are going to be carrying out work at the local exchange, asked how many telephones we had, then if they were more than 3 years old, then what the managing directors name was. I hung up at this point and they immediately called back. I asked them to confirm if they worked for BT and she said yes BT (quieter voice "Exchange"). I asked for a number to call back on and was given this number. First page on Google shows as a scam. Not entirely sure what the scam would be as the call was ended before going past the name of the director

Google also returns a page that looks like a BT webpage. All the logos and stationary are identical to the main BT layout hxxps://btbusiness.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/18990/~/who-can-i-contact-about-service-care-options%3F/c/5134/ Be aware that this is not BT.com website. It is CUSTHELP.com CUSTHELP.com is registered in the USA

Call from Ben (Thompson) about work (Suffolk)
Goodness Ben gets around doesn't he? Our lines come straight from the exchange as we are so close and not via a 'green box'. I told him this and that threw him as he said ALL lines come via a green box. Poor sole, that exposed him as a fraud plus the fact that he wanted to know number of handsets (what's that got to do with the price of fish, or BT work for that matter!) so I took his number and said I'd call him back. Googled the number and found this site for which I am very grateful.

Call from Hannah
Received message to return a call purporting to be from BT enquiring about no. of lines we have as they were undertaking maintenance and it might disrupt us. If they're BT, shouldn't they know as they installed them? Didn't bother to return call - this site says it all! (Sandhurst, Berkshire)
