I belive you have been involved in an accident scam. It is about time that the government set up a site like this that then follows up and takes action against them. I have never given them my permission to hold my data.

Prince, the likelihood is that the call has come from Malaysia (Country Code of 60) but probably using an independent telecom company with its own IDD Prefix Code of 0016 rather than the National Carrier whose IDD Index Code would be just 00.

Call Blocker Dealt with This Call
Just gone through my list of those calls coming in to find out which no. called but did not respond to the challenge made by my Call Guardian. 11 nos. called including this one. Of course I was not disturbed by the call and have now blocked it permanently. Should anyone actually answer one of these calls, the easy answer is to ask them for your broadband account no.. They may quote Data Protection and all that tripe and nonsense, but you reply by saying that you know your account no. and are merely asking them to verify that no. to prove that they are from BT (or whatever). Then point out that the real BT or whatever would be happy to oblige. After all they are supposed to have phone one of their customers. Oh and just for the record 6 of those nos. started 00 implying the use of an IDD Prefix Code and thus from abroad.

Fake Foreign No.
This is a fake foreign no. as none of the IDD Prefix Codes match up with any Country Code. Although many IDD Prefix Codes are 00, none have a Country Code of 15 or 157. Some independent telecoms cos. (as opposed to the National Carrier) do have their own IDD Prefix Codes of 0015 (e.g. Brazil) and indeed some countries use 0015 for faxes e.g. Australia but then they would have their Country Code of, in this case 74 or 740 but there are no such Country Codes.

Terry, the scam has nothing to do with them 'having the account details of ex-directory BT subscribers' and indeed having your name and address is no big issue (on its own either). They are simply playing the numbers (sorry!) game. There are many reports on this and other such sites reporting that the scammers are claiming to be from BT but have actually rung someone who is NOT with BT and thus the scam has fallen at the first hurdle. Having your name/address/phone no. is easily available in the public domain (electoral roll, BT Phone Book, etc.). The extra clue is that the phone no. from which they have rung is the typical mock USA phone no.. I say mock because the IDD Prefix Code is wrong, oh and there is no City Code of 538 (there is a gap between 534 -Eau Claire, WI- and 539 -Tulsa, OK). I chuckled at the 1p address! Shows how much the caller knows about computers!!

Anon. it is made to look like a US phone no. with the City Code of 857 (Boston, MA) but the IDD prefix Code should be 011 not 00 and then followed by the Country Code of 1 for USA (actually N. America and most N. Caribbean countries).
