I was wrong. I check it out with Barclays. The number is legit. The email was about a direct debit set up by a utility company using a new provider. Their systems fouled up, so the DD is a ghost entry, but not active. Barclays were most helpful.

Lyrics of wisdom
Nobody seems to get you, you feel you're on your own, But listen, pretty lady, you don't have to be alone. So, baby, don't cut, baby, don't cut. You can do anything, just promise, baby, you won't cut. I know your heart is hurting, you think the road has end, You may just feel that blade you're holding is your only friend. But, baby, don't cut, baby, don't cut. You can do anything, just promise, baby, you won't cut.

Gentleman with foreign accent said this was a BT Technical helpline. Apparently I had a problem with my server, but he was unable to tell me what the problem was until I carried out certain action on my computer. He also said that the call was being made from S E Asia as BT were using them on their behalf. ???????

Barclaycard Fraud Detection
I got an automated message from this number on answering the phone. Said it was Barclays fraud prevention and to press any number to continue. Suspected this might be a fraud call, so rang Barclaycard from the number on my statement. It was indeed fraud team that had flagged a suspicious activity on my account, which they had blocked. But prior fraudulent transactions had got through onto my card. The customer rep was very helpful and says do not have to pay for the fraudulent transactions. The card will be immediately stopped and a new one sent out. Definitely take this number seriously. But for peace of mind, always phone any call such as this back from a number on your own statement, so you know who you are really talking to.

Serco for DWP
Serco calling on behalf of support for mortgage interest ending. Nice time to call as people are wondering how they are going to cope with Christmas coming up. If you have been receiving help to pay your mortgage interest it is stopping on 5th April 2018. You either have to find the money yourself or take out a loan from the government which you have to pay back when you sell or transfer ownership of your home. I.e. When you die and want to leave your home to your children they will be saddled with your debt or have to sell the family home. Talk about kicking sick and disabled people when they are down. How the hell can you find that money when you CANT work due to chronic illness. More vulnerable people are going to lose their homes.f***ing conservatives for you.

This is a clever scam, it is NOT GOOGLE. The operators on the other end do know how to solve some issues with certain Google products and will ask you to download software that lets them have access to your computer. They will then ask you for a 'small charge' (mine was about £2) and you'll be taken to a payment page, where your card details will be stolen. DO NOT CALL THIS NUMBER OR ANSWER IT, IT'S A SCAM.

This is likely to be scam
On Tuesday of this week my screen went red with a message purporting to be from Firefox. It said I was not to use my 3-year-old computer as it had been invaded and I should block my bank files. I was invited to ring 0800 088 5258. After several suspicious statements about my old computer and how my printer was wired incorrectly, ultimately I was invited to pay £270 after which my computer would be good for another 10 years.

Genuine fraud alert number from Santander
I initallly thought this was a scam but when called back it asked me to identify if a certain transaction was authorised by me from my bank, long story short after checking directly with my bank turns out someone had fraudulently removed £1400 and as I acted quickly they were able to prevent the transaction going ahead.
